Description
If you have never been to Lucca, this walking tour is a good way to find your bearings. A local guide takes you through roughly two and a half hours of the city's history, from the Roman town to modern times, with the main squares and monuments along the way.
You begin on a stretch of the perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, then reach the Cathedral of San Martino and the Guinigi district, where the Guinigi Tower carries a garden on its roof. Next comes Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, built over a Roman structure, and the church of San Frediano with its golden mosaic.
The route follows Via Fillungo, the lively shopping street, to Piazza San Michele in Foro and its Romanesque church. Puccini's birthplace is seen from outside, and the walk closes on Piazza Napoleone, under the Palazzo Ducale.
Entrance to the interiors is optional and not included: the cathedral, the Guinigi Tower, San Frediano, Puccini's birthplace and Palazzo Pfanner. The tour is not suitable for children under 2.
