Description
Truffle hunting near Livorno takes place in Nugola, in the Livorno hills, on a private truffle ground recognised and registered by the Tuscany Region. That means the truffles are inspected and certified, with a known origin.
You set out with a certified truffle hunter and his Lagotto Romagnolo, the dog that does the sniffing. For about an hour and a half you walk among hazelnut trees and old oaks, over a hill looking out on vineyards, where the soil and microclimate favour several kinds of truffle: black, summer black and white. When the dog finds one, you see it come out of the ground.
The tasting is laid out in the truffle ground itself, in the shade of the trees.
- Extra virgin olive oil made on the farm
- Hazelnuts picked from the orchard's trees
- Local cheeses and organic honey
- Fresh truffles with each of them, and local wines
The whole visit lasts around three hours, and a guide and water are included. A vegetarian version can be arranged on request, and it is worth telling the hosts about dietary needs in advance. The experience is not suited to wheelchair users or to people with gluten intolerance or insect allergies. The farm is in Collesalvetti, close to the cruise port of Livorno.
