Description

Palazzo Medici looks onto Lungarno Mediceo, in Pisa, with a crenellated terracotta tower and Gothic windows with two and three lights: it all looks medieval, but this appearance comes largely from a Gothic Revival restoration in 1871. It is the seat of the Prefecture.

Under the disguise, the palazzo really is old: it stands on 11th-century buildings and its shape dates back to the 13th century. On the ground floor the facing is in Verrucano stone, and on the side the medieval load-bearing structures remain.

The Appiani, lords of Pisa, lived here in the late 14th century; in 1446 it passed to the Medici. Lorenzo the Magnificent often stayed here for his health, together with humanists such as Poliziano, and in 1494 King Charles VIII of France lodged here.
