Description

Porta San Zeno is a gate in the ancient walls of Pisa, located near the church of San Zeno. It was once known as "Porta Monetaria" since it was close to the mint that produced all the coins of Pisa.

The gate was re-opened in 1935 to ease urban traffic. The fortification consists of a round arch, arched by a sub-screen segmental arch of verrucano, according to the Pisan way. It is based on simple rectangular pillars with capitals, all of verrucano. Stone ring ganglia still appear in the intrados of the arch, where the hinges of the doors were.
