Description
This Siena and San Gimignano day trip from Pisa or Lucca is a long day on the road, around nine and a half hours, in a small group. The route crosses vineyards and rolling hills in an air-conditioned minivan, with panoramic views from the window and information given on board.
The first stop is San Gimignano, a hilltop town nicknamed the Manhattan of the Renaissance. Its medieval towers are what you came for: they stand as a record of how wealthy its merchants were during the 1100s and 1200s.
The drive then continues to Siena, where you visit the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look for the black and white cathedral, and for Piazza del Campo, the square best known for the Palio di Siena horse race.
