Description
On this Pisa street food walking tour, you eat your way along a two-hour route that shows there is more to Pisa than the Leaning Tower. The walk starts on the Arno, at the Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina, then crosses Ponte Solferino, where the coloured palaces are reflected in the river. From there it moves into the lively university streets around Piazza Dante and ends at Piazza dei Cavalieri, redesigned by Vasari, with the sgraffito facade of Palazzo della Carovana and the Torre della Muda from Dante's Inferno.
The tastings are spread along the route, so every stretch has its own flavour:
- Cecina, a chickpea pancake, crisp outside and creamy inside, by the river
- Pecorino Pisano cheese and finocchiona salami near the university quarter
- Torta coi Bischeri, a tart of chocolate, rice and spices
- Artisanal gelato made with pine nuts from the San Rossore forest
The route also includes Borgo Stretto, the narrow medieval street lined with shops, and the medieval arcades. A local guide leads the way and explains the dishes and the places. Vegetarian options are available, while vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free diets are not catered for. Eat lightly beforehand and wear comfortable shoes. If you wish, the guide can take you on to Piazza dei Miracoli at the end, to see the UNESCO monuments without a rush.
