Description
On this Pisa street food walking tour, the first stop is Piazza dei Cavalieri, once the political centre of the city. The square was redesigned by Giorgio Vasari; look for the sgraffito decoration on the Palazzo della Carovana and for the Torre della Muda, named in Dante's Inferno.
From there you reach Piazza delle Vettovaglie, nicknamed the living room of Pisa, a market square under porticos where local life is on show. Next comes Borgo Stretto, a narrow medieval street of stone arches and small shops. Along the way the guide stops for tastings: cecina, the chickpea pancake that is the city's favourite street food, and Pecorino Pisano.
For a sweet tooth there is Torta coi Bischeri, a tart of spiced chocolate and rice that traditionally includes candied fruit and pine nuts. A handmade gelato, preferably in local flavours, closes the walk.
